How do I plan alcohol-free days?

Last updated July 12, 2026

In short

Choose specific days and decide in advance what you will do in common drinking moments instead. Visible planning, appealing alcohol-free options and a simple if-then rule reduce the need to renegotiate the decision every day.

Fixed days instead of a daily decision

Mark the days at the start of the week. Begin with days that seem realistic and treat the plan as an experiment rather than a test of willpower.

Alcohol-free days do not make drinking on other days risk-free or create alcohol that can be saved up.

Prepare for familiar moments

An if-then rule connects a trigger with an alternative.

  • If I want to switch off after work, I go outside for ten minutes first.
  • If others open wine, I use the alcohol-free drink I prepared.
  • If I get a spontaneous invitation, I decide beforehand whether the day remains alcohol-free.

Important if withdrawal may be possible

If you drink heavily every day or experience shaking, sweating, severe anxiety, nausea or seizures when you stop, do not suddenly quit alone. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous; seek urgent medical advice.

When to seek support: If drinking feels hard to control, affects your daily life, or you drink to cope with anxiety or low mood, talk to your doctor or a local alcohol support service. Advice there is confidential — and reaching out early is a strength, not a failure.
